Jeanne Rooney was recently nominated for Woman of the year. She has a bachelor’s and masters degree in physical education and health care, and has taught public school. She has known many women with breast cancer, and after hearing a friend’s story about the difficulties in finding a place to be fitted following a mastectomy, Jeanne decided to go into business outfitting mastectomy patients with bras, prostheses, and bathing suits in an environment where women felt comfortable. Contours by Jeanne started in the back of a beauty salon 16 years ago. Her business grew, but the salon closed, forcing Jeanne to move. Relocated to a home office nearby, as her clients needs grew, so did her business. Today, The W.I.S.E. Center provides services for all cancer related needs, including a complete wig boutique, lymphedema therapy, therapeutic massage, and more.
According to her nominator, Jeanne works hard to put her clients at ease. Often they come in nervous and depressed, especially following survey or before starting chemotherapy or radiation. When they leave, they’re able to approach their condition more positively. Jeanne continues to grow her business by helping people. She donates wig packets to the oncologists and local hospital cancer centers. The packets are distributed to patients beginning chemotherapy.
Along with providing products and services to cancer patients, Jeanne advises her patients and provides financial information on grants and other alternatives. She has earned the privilege of being a preferred provider with many institutions including St. Barnabas Healthcare System, Medicare, and NJ/NY Medicaid. She’s also a long time supporter of the American Cancer Society. She is on their Middlesex County board, and volunteers on the Relay for Life and Making Strides programs. She ran the Look Good, Feel Better program for 7 years, and continues to host the program in her facility; the American Cancer Society honored her efforts with their Sunshine award.
