Lymphedema is the accumulation of lymph fluid within the interstitial tissue, which causes swelling most often in the hand(s), arm(s) and/or leg(s). Lymphedema can develop when lymphatic vessels are missing or impaired (primary), or when lymph vessels are damaged or when lymph nodes have been removed (secondary).
Lymphedema is a chronic condition and needs constant care and attention. In the U.S., between 15% and 20% of breast cancer patients who undergo axillary lymph node removal develop lymphedema. According to the American Cancer Society, of the two million breast cancer survivors in the U.S., approximately 400,000 must cope with lymphedema on a daily basis. You are not alone in your struggle.
